Top Online Natural Healing Schools

Top Online Natural Healing SchoolsNatural healing schools offer an alternative to modern medical health care by encompassing many natural or “holistic” forms of medicine. Natural healers, or naturopathic doctors (NDs), are taught to consider all elements of the human body when making a diagnosis and determining what treatment to prescribe. Natural healing schools may provide both the education and training needed to advance the well-being of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements of life by restoring the flow of "chi," or energy, in order to achieve anatomic symmetry, spiritual balance, emotional equanimity and mental acuity.

The Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC) reports that sixteen U.S. states have laws that regulate NDs, and legislation is pending in a number of states that would allow NDs to become licensed. Those naturopathic physicians wishing to be licensed as a general practice physician by a state requiring licensing must graduate from an accredited 4-year professional-level program at a naturopathic medical school where the curriculum combines the latest medical science and traditional naturopathic teachings; pass the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam, which is administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE). In addition, candidates must also satisfy all additional licensing requirements for the state in which they plan to practice, which includes state continuing education requirement.

One sub-field of natural healing programs, massage therapy, is projected to see up to 20 percent growth between 2010 and 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Typically, training and employment requirements vary by state for massage therapists, but completing a degree or certification program in massage therapy is one step towards a potential career in the field. In 2011, according to the BLS, massage therapists earned a national annual salary of $35,830 median, with the bottom ten percent earning $18,300 nationally and the top 10 percent earning $69,070 nationally.

For all natural healing programs, interested students should verify the accreditation of their prospective programs. Verification should be performed that any natural healing school under consideration is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council or by another accrediting agency that is approved by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or both. Both DETC and CHEA provide a searchable list of accredited schools.
