Biology is a core subject that is taught in nearly every college or university around the world, and Biology studies are included in most of the scientific disciplines. Students in biology schools will learn how all living organisms are interrelated, and how they share basic fundamental characteristics, such as DNA and cell composition.

Biology schools and colleges will often divide studies into a number of disciplines. For instance, medical students will study biology as it relates to human anatomy; chemistry students will study biology as it relates to the chemistry of life itself; ecology students will study biology as it relates to the environment, etc. Biology can even encompass animal behaviors and human psychology.

Biology studies emerged from traditional medical practices and natural history dating back to the ancient Greeks. In the nineteenth century, the study of Biology became a single coherent field. Prior to that time, biology schools did not exist as we know them today.

Today's modern biology schools and colleges can prepare you to become a biologist, or a scientist who is primarily concerned with the study of living organisms. However, there are many different types of biologists, each specializing in a specific field of Biology, such as Life Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry and more.

Degree programs in Biology focus on living organisms and how they interact with the environment. Schools and colleges offering a Bachelor degree in Biology (BS) will usually include such disciplines as chemistry, mathematics, computer science and physics. Advanced Biology degrees, such as a Master degree or PhD will allow the student to focus on a specific subfield, such as marine biology or botany.
