Doctorate Programs - Are They the Right Path for You?

Those who wish to become an expert in a particular field will most likely face the prospect of entering a Doctorate Program. To achieve this level of education takes a certain type of personality, as the Doctorate Program entails a long and intense period of study and much perseverance. It's not for everyone, but with some soul-searching, you can determine if a Doctorate Program is the right path for you.

Doctorate programs prepare students for roles of leadership in fields of science, education, law, music, psychology, language, art, agriculture, medicine, veterinary medicine, horticulture, anthropology, geology, and much more. Students entering doctorate degree programs demonstrate strong commitments to their education, professional goals, and quality of life and come prepared to immerse themselves in study, to engage in research, and to participate in professional activities, as these are all integral parts of degree programs.

Many doctoral students have found it very helpful to determine their path first by confirming their personality type. Personality types are closely aligned with occupational requirements. Many colleges and universities offer counseling services that can help with this testing to reveal important characteristics of your personality: whether you are outgoing or reserved, realistic or imaginative, logical or sensitive, organized or spontaneous, etc. Determining the characteristics of your personality can lead to a happier, more productive, and more successful educational experience and ultimate occupation.

It is important to understand your individual energy. Extroverts direct their energy outwardly toward things and people, while introverts direct their energy inward, focusing on their own thoughts, observations, and responses. Extroverts are active, expressive, and social; introverts are reserved, watchful, and private, and tend to have more depth. ..... Read More

The type of information you note and retain indicates whether you are intuitive or sensory in your approach to experiences. Intuitives find connections, relationships, and meaning or possibilities; they are imaginative, creative, and theoretical, putting faith in their instincts. Sensors like facts, details, and reality, are practical and literal, and trust information they have gained from personal experience.

Decision-making styles are important as well. Thinkers make decisions based on sense and logic, and objective and impersonal criteria, while feelers make decisions by using personal values and feelings about issues. Thinkers are more calm and analytical, and feelers tend to be sensitive and empathetic, and are compelled by extenuating circumstances and the search for unity.

Environmental comfort also enters in as a factor. Judgers prefer structure, order, and predictability, where they can decide and have things settled at once. Perceivers take in as much experience as possible, like to keep their options open, and are able to adapt. Judgers are organized and productive; perceivers are flexible, curious, and have difficulty conforming.

Before entering into a college or university doctorate program that will mean years of study and preparation for your chosen profession, it is advised that you look closely at what will be required of you and that you choose a field that suits the characteristics of your personality. The chances of your future happiness and success depend on it!
