Acupuncture School FAQs

Acupuncture schools train prospective candidates to become licensed acupuncturists (L.Ac.). Professional degree offerings include Master's in Acupuncture, Master's of Science in Acupuncture, Master's of Science in Oriental Medicine, Master's of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and Oriental Medical Doctor.

Contrary to popular belief, students who enroll in an acupuncture school learn not only how to insert thin needles into the skin of a patient, they learn a comprehensive curriculum in musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology. Other topics may include Oriental medicine history, medical terminology, Chinese medicine, diagnostic methods and systems, cell biology, herbal medicine, pathology, biochemistry, physical examination, orthopedic assessments, clinical practice, pharmacology, massage, internal medicine, nutrition, Tui Na, behavioral medicine, chiropractics, and other related professional aspects of the field.

On average, acupuncture courses run about 3-4 years in duration, in addition to clinical internship. While enrolled, acupuncture students will gain extensive knowledge and skills in acupuncture, Oriental bodywork, Qigong, Chinese herbs, homeopathy, and associated natural healing modalities.
