Chefs, cooks and bakers work in a variety of culinary environments including hotels, restaurants, catering, bakeries, cruise ships, private homes and more. While food preparation is a skill learned through hands-on practice, online culinary schools can provide students the opportunity to learn some aspects of the culinary trade, such as hospitality and restaurant management and culinary operations. Online culinary schools also offer students the opportunity to work on culinary skills at home. The advent of Internet education technology has helped pave the way for some culinary students to learn about some facets of the culinary business via pod casts, DVD training materials, online videos and other multimedia tools.

Chefs and head cooks may be responsible for developing recipes and menus, inspect supplies and equipment, order and maintain food inventories, monitor sanitation practices, and lead a kitchen in food preparation. They may hold positions as executive chefs, head cooks, chefs de cuisine, sous chefs, personal chefs, and private chefs.

Cook duties may include weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, baking, roasting, or broiling meats and fish, garnishing and arranging food, and cleaning work areas and utensils. They may hold positions as cafeteria cooks, restaurant cooks or short-order cooks.

Culinary students may wish to hone their cooking and baking skills via online culinary schools. These students can apply what they’ve learned in on-campus or online culinary schools in their own, familiar kitchen. In 2011, the Wall Street Journal took an in-depth look at the following three online culinary schools and, while they did not rank the schools because they each appeal to a different kind of student, they do suggest checking them out:

  • Top Chef University
  • Rouxbe
  • Culinary Institute of America: Prochef Podcasts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a national annual wage for chefs and head cooks of $42,350 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $24,770 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $74,060 nationally (BLS.gov, 2012). Restaurant cooks earned a national annual wage of up to $22,080 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $16,800 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $32,160 annually (BLS.gov, 2012).

Restaurant Management Online

Restaurant managers are responsible for the daily management of establishments that prepare and serve food to customers. This may include overseeing inventory, monitoring food preparation, managing personnel, scheduling, resolving complaints, and managing budget and payroll. They may work in counter-service restaurants, full service restaurants, special food services, traveler accommodations, hospitals or schools.

Restaurant management is often considered a branch of hospitality training, and students of hospitality and restaurant management programs may have the opportunity to gain a foundation in business administration and management as it pertains to the food and beverage industry. While some online restaurant and culinary management programs do not include a cooking component, some may require previous culinary education and/or professional restaurant experience.

Some restaurant management courses are hybrid courses, meaning that they offer a combination of on-campus and online education.

Food service managers earned a national annual wage of $48,110 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $30,570 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $81,410 nationally in 2011 (BLS.gov, 2012).

When researching colleges and universities, please be sure to check that your schools of interest have all been accredited by professional accrediting organizations that are approved by The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or both.

One such accrediting body for culinary programs is the American Culinary Federation (ACF). The ACF provides a list of accredited culinary postsecondary programs. The ACF also offers information on scholarships, school selection, continuing education, and apprentice programs.
