Chefs and head cooks may be responsible for developing recipes and menus, inspect supplies and equipment, order and maintain food inventories, monitor sanitation practices, and lead a kitchen in food preparation. They may hold positions as executive chefs, head cooks, chefs de cuisine, sous chefs, personal chefs, and private chefs.
Cook duties may include weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, baking, roasting, or broiling meats and fish, garnishing and arranging food, and cleaning work areas and utensils. They may hold positions as cafeteria cooks, restaurant cooks or short-order cooks.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a national annual wage for chefs and head cooks of $42,350 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $24,770 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $74,060 nationally (BLS.gov, 2012). Restaurant cooks earned a national annual wage of up to $22,080 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $16,800 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $32,160 annually (BLS.gov, 2012).
Restaurant Management Online
Restaurant managers are responsible for the daily management of establishments that prepare and serve food to customers. This may include overseeing inventory, monitoring food preparation, managing personnel, scheduling, resolving complaints, and managing budget and payroll. They may work in counter-service restaurants, full service restaurants, special food services, traveler accommodations, hospitals or schools.
Restaurant management is often considered a branch of hospitality training, and students of hospitality and restaurant management programs may have the opportunity to gain a foundation in business administration and management as it pertains to the food and beverage industry. While some online restaurant and culinary management programs do not include a cooking component, some may require previous culinary education and/or professional restaurant experience.
Some restaurant management courses are hybrid courses, meaning that they offer a combination of on-campus and online education.
Food service managers earned a national annual wage of $48,110 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $30,570 nationally and the highest 10 percent earning up to $81,410 nationally in 2011 (BLS.gov, 2012).
