Human resources, often times simply referred to as HR, is the process of managing a company or group’s workforce or human resources. In general, HR managers act as a professional liaison between employers and their employees, recognizing grievances while also organizing the hiring, training and termination of employees. HR managers also handle employee benefits and pay; ensuring employees of all levels are compensated.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov, 2012), human resources managers are usually required to have a bachelor’s degree in human resources or business administration. But since not every undergraduate program offers a degree in human resources, this is not always feasible. Human resources management careers
The primary careers for graduates of a human resources management program include employee relations managers, staffing managers and payroll managers. According to the BLS, employment of human resources managers is expected to grow by up to 13 percent between 2010 and 2020 (BLS.gov, 2012). Human resources managers earned a national annual wage of $99,130 median in 2011, with the lowest 10 percent earning up to $60,070 nationally and the highest 10-percent earning up to $169,310 nationally in 2011.
In 2011, the BLS notes, human resources were widely employed in the following industries:
- Local government
- General medical and surgical hospitals
- Universities and professional schools
- Employment services

Accreditation must come from an officially recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), and the organizations must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or both. The ACICS provides a searchable directory for finding member institutions, as does CHEA. HR programs can also be an affiliate of SHRM, or other professional organizations, which may add greater weight to a program’s degree or certificate.

This certification shows a student has mastered California’s unique laws and regulations and can practice in the state of California. This certification is not required for employment but could be beneficial for HR managers and managers in the state looking to advance their career.
